Hi, I am Anja Pownell. I help aspiring market access professionals understand the German market access system so they can excel in their careers.

Why do I know about this?
I have worked in pharmaceutical consulting for over 7 years.
There, I have been leading numerous projects to support our clients who were considering a launch in Germany. I thoroughly enjoyed answering all the curious questions from clients and colleagues, which meant really drilling down and understanding the system inside-out. Over the years, I have become the go-to person for any Germany-related questions.
At the same time, I always continue to closely monitor any updates or legislation changes affecting the system, and putting these into their context. This means I can keep my clients and colleagues on top of the latest updates to best inform our recommendations. As part of this, I have also assessed the trends of benefit assessments over the years and have presented on these at ISPOR conferences.
But I have also come to realize that there is quite a lot of confusion and uncertainty of the German market access system and the continuous changes affecting it. Thus, I have started teaching on the German market access system, including the AMNOG legislation for medicinal products as well as method assessments of medical devices.
My story
I joined a market access consultancy straight after completing my Ph.D. in biochemistry. Then, the world of HTAs, pricing, reimbursement, and market access was completely new to me.
Because German is my mother language, I started to get involved in projects concerning the German market. But at first, I had doubts and was wondering if I truly understood enough to make recommendations or support some projects. Maybe you have some of these thoughts as well:
- “I am not sure I can explain the German market access system to my colleagues.”
- “The system is too complex and complicated.”
- “I hear what the German experts are saying, but if I’m honest, I don’t understand it.”
- “I am worried I make a fool of myself in the interview with the German expert.”
- “It’s impossible to continue asking my colleagues or supervisor for help. They must think I am a liability on this project.”
So, I’ve scoured the internet to find any resources, such as courses or books, that allowed me to quickly get up to speed on the system. But I was quite disappointed by what is available out there. The courses were quite expensive and held as full-day seminars that needed to be attended in person. The time and travel requirements made it impossible to consider these as options. The books were often written in quite a technical language and focused on just some subtopics.
Instead, I analyzed hundreds of German benefit assessments, G-BA announcements, IQWiG method papers, and any other documentation published by the G-BA or IQWiG. I spoke to German experts, such as people who worked at the G-BA, IQWiG, or SHI funds, and slowly began to join all the pieces. Over time, I have gained a wealth of knowledge that I can now share.
While I’ve been on maternity leave with my baby boy, I decided to use nap times to finally build a resource of everything I learned. And that’s why I developed GermanMarketAccessSimplified.
My aim is to share my knowledge and learnings with other market access professionals, so they can get up to speed much faster.
