This new DMP for obesity should consider and combine various therapeutic approaches to offer the best possible care, treat patients with obesity in accordance with guidelines, and support them in dealing with the disease.
Now, the G-BA has commissioned the IQWiG to research and evaluate the clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of obesity (pathological overweight). This project is split into two age groups: adults and children / adolescents. In one year, the IQWiG will provide information on the diagnosis, how to establish the severity, the current treatment recommendations, and an assessment of the certainty of these findings.
The results of the IQWiG will then be used by the G-BA to
- establish scientifically sound requirements for the planned DMP
- advise which therapeutic and supportive methods are to be anchored in the DMP
- determine quality-assured training courses for the DMP participants to
- educate about the disease and the relevant influencing factors, such as diet, exercise, sleep disorders and stress
- support age-specific health-promoting behavior
- positively influence the course of the disease and avoiding unnecessary complications and secondary diseases.
The IQWiG results for the adults will be available to the G-BA by 31 August 2022; the results for children and adolescents by 31 October 2022. The development of the DMP by the G-BA is then meant to be concluded by 31 July 2023.
